Conjunctions and Sentence Types


Topic 7    Conjunctions and Sentence Types

Conjunctions
     -----  coordinating conjunctions 
     -----  subordinating conjunctions
            
These 2 conjunctions enable us to combine sentences (i.e clauses) in different ways to achieve different effects.

All grammatical structures can be coordinated, but only clauses can be subordinated.

For sentences, we don’t need conjunctions at all.  Sentences can stand alone to express complete thoughts.

Conjunctions
-----  grammatical connectors  ----- links words, phrases / clauses 
-----  indicate the relationship between the elements that it connects in the sentence

 Forms

     -----  Single Word        -----  and, because, but, so, when………..
     -----  Compound          -----  as long as, provided that, so that
     -----  Correlative  ----  not only… but also, so….that,  either … or, neither…nor
