Clauses



Clauses 

A clause consists of a subject and a verb.
          A clause =  [S] V……………………………

----- Finite clause 
               a finite verb group

          -----  Non-finite clause
              a non-clause verb group
              may/ may not have a subject

A)  In a finite clause
     A main / independent clause may have one / more dependent clauses.

          Main clause             =  independent clause
          Subordinate clause  =  dependent clause

          Dependent clauses
          = a noun clause
          = a relative/ adjectival clause
          = an adverb clause

Examples:
Identifying different kinds of clauses.
1.  As she was tired, she sat down for a while.
2.  It has been 7 years since he went to England.
3.  It is true that he can speak several languages very well.
     That________________________________________________________________
4.  The girl whose father is a policeman is Tom’s neighbour.  (Break into simple
      sentences)

5.  [What he has just said] is very interesting.   (                 )
6.  The little kitten which is very cute meows a lot every day.  (                      )
7.  She didn’t want to tell us where she lived.   (                    )
8.  If I were rich, I would build a house in the rural area.  (                         )
9.  That is the mechanic whom I asked for the repair of my car last week.  (                )

B)  Non-finite clause
